Kells Wireless General Information

'Kells Wireless' is Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub's latest offering. With technology progressing at such a phenomenal rate it's sometimes hard to keep up. Kells is proud to be one of Seattle's ONLY full service restaurant and bars to offer our customers un-metered (FREE) high-speed wireless Internet access!
How it Works

It's Easy! Bring your WiFi (802.11b) enabled device (PDA, Laptop, etc.) into our establishment, turn it on, open your Internet browser software and start surfing. That's it!

By design our system should be very easy to use for our customers.

Things to note:

  • TCP/IP settings should be set to 'Obtain IP address automatically' (aka 'DHCP enabled')

  • DNS settings should be set to 'Obtain DNS server automatically'

  • SSID is 'kells_wireless' (or '*Any*')

  • WEP should be 'disabled'

  • We block SMTP port 25. Meaning: If you use an email client such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, etc. to send mail you won't be able to send outgoing messages from our network.

    You can still use 'Web based' email services such as Yahoo! Mail or MSN's Hotmail without issue. The reason we cannot open port 25 (outgoing mail) on our network is, if we did, spammers could cruise by and use our connection (and our great ISP, Speakeasy.net) to send un-solicited email. Kells strongly opposes SPAM thus we must prevent the potential abuse leaving an outgoing mail port open on a public network could cause. Thank you for understanding.
Technology Involved
Tux! The Linux Penquin and Mascot!
The Kells Wireless Gateway Werver (WGS) utilizes cutting edge hardware and software. The server itself runs a hardened variant of the Linux OS on a Pentium class computer. The software handling the gateway's class-of-service authentication is written in Perl, a Common Gateway Interface (or CGI) language, custom tailored to our specific needs.
